Identification Tip

The Peacock's spectacular pattern of eyespots make it one of the most easily recognised and best-known species.

What do they eat?

Caterpillars munch on:

  • Common Nettle (favourite)
  • Small Nettle
  • Hop

Adults take nectar from:

  • Blackthorn
  • Bugle (Ajuga)
  • Dandelions
  • Wild Privet
  • Yarrow (Achillea)

They also feed on sugary sap from trees.

Where does it spend the winter?

Peacocks hibernate through the winter in their adult form, sometimes in groups. Up to 40 individuals have been found together in one place, and these groups may contain other species like Small Tortoiseshell butterflies and Herald moths.
