Info Hub / Case Studies / Wild Spaces Success for Biodiversity Action Group and Butterfly Conservation volunteers
Gloucestershire
Whiteshill and Ruscombe Biodiversity Action Group was formed in response to the call for all parish councils to raise awareness of the rapid decline of our wildlife at a local level and to record and map out local wildlife. Volunteers from Butterfly Conservation's Gloucestershire Branch worked together to use the Wild Spaces programme and it's resources to help the council and local communities make positive changes for nature.
A few months after the initial meeting of the group a Wild Spaces leaflet was delivered with the newsletter to every household in the parish. Thanks to two enthusiastic members of the group, Peter Keevil and Nigel Pitel, attention was drawn to the scheme on the local Facebook page, at the Primrose Teas in the church and a special Wild Spaces table at the Party in the Park in July.
The old graveyard at the parish church, the chapel graveyard and the small village green were first to be registered as a Wild Space. Peter has teamed up with the local Men’s Shed woodwork group who make bird boxes to offer to everyone who pledges to register a Wild Space in their garden.
