Our Wild Spaces projects have been engaging people across the UK with butterflies and moths, the project team are excited to see the difference they are making for people and nature.
Wild Spaces blooming across Bristol…
Angus Walker, Butterfly Conservation’s Wild Spaces Project Officer, alongside some green-fingered volunteers have been busy getting their hands dirty creating Wild Spaces across 35 primary schools in Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare.
Pupils, parents, teachers and members of the local community have been making the most of the spring sunshine to prepare growing areas, ready to be planted up with a whole host of butterfly and moth friendly plants.
And the ‘mini meadows’ that volunteers helped to create in some schools last autumn are now blooming with Poppies, Ox-eye Daisies, Cornflowers and meadow grasses.
In these schools, volunteers from Keystone Environmental used their community volunteering days to help us strip the turf. The areas were then seeded with a local wildflower mix by pupils.
Butterfly Conservation wants to empower school communities to do something positive for butterflies and moths by creating the spaces, and in doing so to create networks of people who can contribute to maintaining the spaces going forward.
At a recent workday at a school in Bristol, one parent commented:
“I’ve never had a garden, so this is all very new to me. I had actually never planted a plant before today, which I’m slightly embarrassed to say.
“I’ve really enjoyed the day and feel like we’ve done something positive for the world, which is a nice feeling.”
Wales, watch this Wild Space…
Butterfly Conservation are now working to help Wales go wild with Wild Spaces Officer, Sammy Fraser, forging connections with partners and community groups to help shape and develop the project.
Work is already underway to gather ideas on how to ensure this project benefits local communities.
